Tiakina te Kōrero for kaiako

Nau mai, haere mai! Welcome to Tiakina te Kōrero for kaiako

Tiakina te Kōrero for kaiako is Talking Matters' foundational learning pathway designed to support knowledge sharing in the early childhood education space. The content is organized in six modules around key aspects of a language environment that we aim to enrich alongside kaiako. Some of the knowledge that we share here may be new, whereas some may be a refresher. Kei te pai! As a kaiako, you get to decide what's relevant for you. The ultimate goal is to get on the same page as a team to create language rich environments for all tamariki in your service.

Foundational modules

We recommend you watch these modules first, as they set a foundation for our mahi towards enriching language environments for tamariki

Language Rich Environments

In this module we tackle questions like : What do we mean by language-rich environments? Why are they so important in the early years?  How can we boost all the interaction already happening in your service?

Responsive Interactions

Responsive interactions are essential for tamariki to thrive. They form and strengthen the neural connections in the brain that support the development of communication and social skills. But how can you make them a key component of your practice?

Communication Profiles

A communication profile enables you to think holistically about how tamariki communicate. Instead of "classifying" tamariki into types or categories, we suggest putting the child at the centre when you think about communication.

Focused modules

Focused learning about key areas of the language environment that can be improved so they become drivers of rich early language.

5. Physical environments

Physical environments matter for how we interact. They can be intentionally set up to create opportunities and provide context for early communication and language.

6. Relationships

This module is about making "team tamaiti" stronger. That means kaiako, whānau and the community working together to create language rich environments where tamariki can access and participate in responsive interactions.

We appreciate your feedback
